8 days to go
May 27, 2007 on 11:23 pm | In General | 3 Comments |Until these exams will be over. I really wish it was sooner as I’m totally fed up trying to revise the same stuff over and over. Unfortunately it seems the rest of Scotland has actually finished exams and here’s my trailing along on the end. Only people worse off than us is the 2nd years who’ve got an extra week and an OSCE to add to an already hellish year (which, obviously, I’m eagerly looking forward to…).
Still no flat for next year although I’m hoping this week is going to be it. And really, we don’t have much choice as one flatmate is off on holiday this time next week. If we don’t get something sorted it’ll mean coming back through here throughout the summer for viewings. Not too bad for me but another flatmate is going back to Newcastle where it’s a little more tricky.
Last week saw the end to season 3 of Lost. It was a reasonably decent end to an OK season. Sure they put a spin on it and made it a little different but it’ll never have the same impact as season 1. The did announce there will only be 48 more episodes (although they’re dragging this out to 3 more seasons…I can only assume for money) which I guess lets them finish it the way it’s meant to be finished. Sadly I don’t think they’ll find an ending to explain everything and especially not everything that some people have discovered. When the aliens start to land I’m switching off.
Much like I did with ER. I was a faithful viewer until series 13 but now it seems to be running story arcs all over again with different casts. I remain convinced they should have ended this when Carter left, much like Friends (kind of) did with Rachel. I’ve been watching some classic ER recently and the latest series is simply no where near it.
House, on the other hand, may be going the same way a lot quicker. The season final is this week and I’m going to be judging the whole series based on it (fair? probably not). I like House, it’s new and quite different from other medical dramas. Plus add in that it actually is based on real diseases (much like ER used to be). The problem with this is not everyone really wants to know all about the details of extremely rare diseases and I guess they need to add in extra stuff to keep it going. So far, I’ve not turned it off so it might last a little bit longer.
Since I’m moaning about medical dramas I may as well throw in Casualty and Holby. Credit where it’s due, Casualty is probably one of the major factors which got me where I am now (though it wasn’t mentioned in my interview!). I’ll leave my future patients and colleagues to judge whether this is an achievement for Casualty or not. Today, however, Casualty just doesn’t seem to cut it compared to the above. This may have something to do with the UK’s (particularly the BBC’s) inability to create drama. True, I haven’t watched an episode in a while but I don’t imagine it’s changed much. If Charlie ever leaves, I’d watch that.
Holby I liked more as I got to see it start (Casualty having started 2 years before my birth!) and I can’t deny cardiothoracic surgery is damn cool. Haven’t watched it recently so I probably can’t be too judgemental about it. I do miss Meyer though and probably wouldn’t relate it to the original if I watched it now.
Humm, that’s a lot of TV talk, especially since I don’t have a TV.
Medics’ Ball!
May 13, 2007 on 10:07 pm | In Uni | 1 Comment |So we had our 1st year Medic Ball last night. It was in the Crowne Plaza hotel on the Clyde, which was great for me as I didn’t need to worry about taxis. I went all out (quite rightly so) and hired a kilt for the night. This proved a great source of comedy to my non-Scottish friends. Disappointingly, a few of the Scottish ones didn’t opt for the kilt! We got a 3 course meal of melon, chicken and chocolate moose. The latter we were all told to eat hands free (see bottom right) which ended up with a chocolate food fight between the tables. Not sure the hotel staff were too pleased with that.
The meal was followed by a ceilidh on possible the smallest dance floor I’ve ever seen. Not quite sure how we managed to get a Strip the Willow on it but somehow we managed it. After the ceilidh, which didn’t last quite as long as it could’ve, we had a very cheesy disco. Regardless of the cheesyness, everyone seemed to enjoy it and most stayed till the end at 1am. After that, people were divided on what was going on. I was half expecting people to go back to mine but (perhaps luckily) that didn’t happen. I wasn’t up for trailing around in a hire kilt which was likely to be vomited on so headed back.
And now, with 3 weeks to go till the exam I really should get my head down and do some work. The problem is flatmates aren’t quite so bothered, so I think I’ll be spending a little bit more time in the library from now on.
We’ve also got a flat viewing on Wednesday. This one has a lot of hype on it for being an excellent flat and I wouldn’t be surprised if we go for it. Amazing this flat can have a good reputation and we know nothing about it, other flats haven’t had such an advantage.
A bank induced holiday
May 7, 2007 on 4:13 pm | In General | No Comments |Seems to be one of the few types the Uni follows, which gives us a whole week for this PBL which also is pretty small so plenty of time for revision. Yet here I am, procrastinating as usual. I’ve gone from Wikipedia to my school yearbook and now to my blog. I’ll be starting the clean my room next just to get out of revision. Exactly 28 days to go now. It’s a bit tough considering my flatmates finished a long time ago. Think I’ll need to head in to the library or I’ll never do any revision.
Apart from the work and revision, I’ve managed to get out a bit. Went for a flying visit home last week to get blood taken and ended up meeting more people in one afternoon than I usually meet on a whole trip home. The blood was for Heb B titre which hopefully has worked well, I’ll find out in 3 weeks. The sister also suggested I give Forth Valley a phone about phleb jobs over the summer. We’ll see.
The weather was very good last week. A bit too good for me but it cheered the Londoners up. We managed to fit in a BBQ in Kelvingrove park before the sun disappeared. Hopefully it’ll be back, but probably the day before exams!
Finally went to go go-karting last night after this had been delayed many times. However, since noone had really bothered to book we couldn’t get on the track. In the end we had a game of lazer quest then headed back for some pool games and Dominoes.
Off to see Spiderman 3 tonight at the persuasion of my friends. I didn’t really enjoy the first couple, so I’ll probably hate this one. Who knows…
Firstly though, we’re going to view a flat in Hyndland. Due to recent incidents were down to 3 people. Basically the other person we would’ve been living with has found others. He didn’t, however, tell us (including his best friend from school) about this until very recently even though he was viewing flats with us at the same time - a bit sneaky if you ask me.
